the hornrims
2007 - 2013
New York City
The Hornrims formed in 2007 when Joe Popp (dogs on ice, Joe Popp) and Tylor Durand (Working Man’s Trio, The Slip) had the idea to form an acoustic duo. After writing a few songs and having a few rehearsals, Durand thought the band would sound better as a three piece electric combo. Joe’s old dog on ice bandmate, Brian McCabe (bass), who had just relocated to NYC, agreed to join the band. Durand, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, switched to drums and Popp helmed the guitar and vocals.
The Hornrims 1st album Holland is a gritty affair with punkish rock riffs and a lot of bluster. When Joe had the idea to record a mafia musical version of Shakespeare’s Pericles, the band veered off into a more progressive rock direction. The band recorded the tracks and the rock musical Pericles was mounted by Jobsite Theater in both Tampa and at Here Arts Center in NYC.
After a while of not recording and performing, The Hornrims cut their final album Song of Dystopia (2013) that represents the pinnacle of the band’s complexity and musicality, touching on a multitude of music genres. Sadly, the bad broke up shortly after the release of Dystopia. Tylor and Joe would work together on a number of projects until Tylor left the country in 2015.
